Lead 16 pieces across an 8×8 board. Keep your king safe and coordinate your pieces to deliver checkmate. Practise against three computer levels or invite a friend.
White starts, then players take turns. Select your piece and a highlighted destination. Kings move one square; queens move along ranks, files or diagonals; rooks move straight; bishops move diagonally. Knights jump in an L shape. Other ordinary moves cannot pass through pieces. Pawns advance one square, or two on their first move, and capture diagonally forward. A threatened king must be made safe. If no move can do so, it is checkmate and the opponent wins. Having no legal move without being in check is a draw. Pawns reaching the far edge promote to a queen, rook, bishop or knight. Castling and en passant are available when their conditions are met. Casual draws are automatic for common insufficient material, threefold repetition, or 50 moves by each side without a pawn move or capture; checkmate takes precedence. Computer games save each move and can resume within 24 hours. Undo makes the game unscored practice. Friends have 90 seconds per turn.
