Banqi

A LITTLE PLAY, A FRESH MIND

Banqi

Take a break. Let curiosity lead.

Reveal 32 hidden pieces on an 8×4 board. Choose Classic rules or Xiangqi moves, face three computer levels, or invite an online friend.

Classic rules use one-square orthogonal moves and ranked captures: pawns beat kings, cannons capture across one piece, and equal-rank captures remove both pieces. Xiangqi mode uses each piece’s movement pattern without capture ranks; pawns can move backward. Hidden pieces do not block movement paths or count as cannon screens, but you cannot land on or capture them. Open Rules for the full details.

The first player is random and the first reveal assigns colors. Capture every enemy or leave the opponent without a legal action to win. Fifty plies without a reveal or capture is a draw. Online turns last 60 seconds.

Computer wins without undo add 10 points on Beginner, 30 on Normal and 80 on Advanced. The challenge leaderboard ranks total accumulated points. Only these eligible wins can receive platform coin and chest rewards. Losses, draws, resignations, abandoned games and friend matches add no computer points.

Undo is available only against the computer and reverses your previous action and its reply. Canceling the warning keeps eligibility. Confirming permanently makes that game practice: no points, coins or chests, including after refresh or resume.

Use Undo, Resign, Rules and Exit below the board. Exit returns to the menu and preserves an unfinished computer game for up to 24 hours; starting a new game abandons it. Results show the outcome, reason and points, with Play again and Return to menu. Phones use landscape; desktop supports windowed and fullscreen play.

How to play

Classic rules

  • Equal-rank captures remove both pieces. Cannon versus cannon still requires exactly one screen. If both sides lose their last piece, draw; if only one side has no pieces, that side loses.
  • Each turn, reveal one hidden piece or move your revealed piece one square horizontally or vertically.
  • King > Advisor > Elephant > Chariot > Horse > Cannon > Pawn. Equal or higher ranks capture; pawns capture only pawns and kings. Kings cannot capture pawns.
  • Cannons capture any revealed enemy in the same row or column across exactly one piece, hidden or revealed. Without capturing, cannons also move only one square.

Xiangqi moves

  • The same 32 hidden pieces fill an 8×4 half-board. Only movement and capture rules change.
  • Chariots and cannons move through hidden pieces as empty path squares; revealed pieces block. A cannon capture requires exactly one revealed screen; hidden pieces do not count.
  • Horse: an L-shape; only a revealed piece on its first orthogonal square blocks it. Elephant: two diagonal squares; only a revealed midpoint blocks it. Hidden pieces on these paths do not block and remain hidden.
  • Advisor: one diagonal square. King and pawn: one orthogonal square, including backward. No palace or river restrictions.
  • Any rank may capture a revealed enemy. Capturing the king does not end the game; there is no check or checkmate.

Both modes: random first player; the first reveal assigns colors. Hidden or friendly pieces cannot be captured. Win by capturing every enemy or leaving no legal action. Draw after 50 plies without a reveal or capture. Rules stay fixed for the game; online turns last 60 seconds.
